Incontinence & Prolapse

Female Incontinence

We are experts at treating all forms of urinary incontinence in women, including urge, stress, and overflow incontinence as well as incontinence associated with medical conditions. Our goal is the same as yours: to give you your freedom and confidence back!

  • Diagnosis
When you come to see us for incontinence, well begin with a thorough history and physical examination. We may ask you to keep a diary or undergo office, laboratory, or urodynamic testing to help us better understand the exact causes of your problem.
  • Treatment
A large number of effective treatments are available for urinary incontinence. We'll take the time to help you understand all your options and choose the ones that are best for you.Treatments for urinary incontinence include behavior and lifestyle changes as well as pelvic muscle exercises. There are medications to treat incontinence, as well as surgical procedures that are highly effective for women who are the right candidates for surgery. One treatment that works well for many of our patients is the Tension-free Vaginal Tape Obturator procedure (TVT-O), from Ethicon. This is a lightweight mesh which stops leakage by supporting your urethra. It is inserted using a simple, minimally invasive, outpatient technique.

Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Mild cases of prolapse of the uterus, bladder, and rectum may not cause symptoms or need to be treated. When treatment is required, we can offer you a range of effective options.

  • Uterine Prolapse
Uterine prolapse occurs when the uterus slips down into the vagina as a result of the weakening of muscles and ligaments. Treatments for prolapse of the uterus include lifestyle changes, pelvic floor exercises, use of a supportive device called a pessary, and surgery.
  • Cystoceles or bladder prolapse
Cystoceles occur when the bladder bulges into the vagina because of the weakening of the tissue wall. Frequent urination, incomplete voiding, and pelvic pressure can all be symptoms of cystoceles. Treatments include pelvic muscle exercises, estrogen therapy, use of a pessary, or surgery.
  • Rectoceles
Rectoceles occur when the front wall of the rectum bulges into the vagina because of one symptom of a rectocele. Treatments include pelvic muscle exercises, diet, and in rare cases, surgery.
